Unlock! is my favourite take on “escape room in a box,” full stop. I’ve tried alternatives like Exit, and while they’re fine on paper, I genuinely don’t see the point when Unlock exists. The series nails the balance between clever puzzles, tactile card play, and smart digital integration without overstaying its welcome or relying on gimmicks.
I’ve played every Unlock box released so far, and the consistency is impressive. Every set delivers three distinct scenarios, each with its own theme, mechanics, and puzzle ideas. Some land harder than others, but even the weaker scenarios usually have at least one moment where the design clicks and you think, that’s clever. Anytime I hear there’s a new Unlock release, it’s an automatic buy for me.
What really sets Unlock apart is creativity. The puzzles rarely feel recycled. You’re not just combining numbers and symbols endlessly. You’re manipulating time, space, audio cues, visual tricks, and physical card interactions in ways that feel intentional rather than arbitrary. The series respects players who enjoy thinking laterally, experimenting, and occasionally failing forward.
Another huge advantage is that Unlock boxes are non-destructive. Unlike some escape room games where you’re expected to rip, fold, or permanently alter components, Unlock lets you replay scenarios later or pass the box along. That alone makes it easier to recommend.
What Is Unlock! Supernatural Adventures?
Unlock! Supernatural Adventures is a three-scenario box that leans hard into supernatural and mythological themes. As with all Unlock releases, the box contains:
- A deck of numbered cards used to discover locations, items, and puzzles
- A rulebook that teaches you how to play in minutes
- A free companion app that handles timers, hints, puzzles, and surprises
Each scenario plays in roughly 60 minutes, though that can stretch longer depending on experience level and how stubborn you are when stuck.
One odd and slightly disappointing note: this particular box did not include a physical solutions booklet, which most other Unlock boxes I’ve purchased did. That’s unfortunate, especially when you’re completely stuck and just want to understand the intended logic behind a puzzle. This scenario does a great job of easing players into the box, introducing mechanics gradually without feeling like a tutorial.
The puzzles here are smart but approachable. There’s a strong sense of place, and the narrative unfolds clearly as you progress. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you confident going into the rest of the box.
Dia de los Muertos
This scenario leans heavily into Mexican folklore and the theme of the Day of the Dead. Visually and thematically, it stands out immediately. There’s a stronger narrative focus here, and the puzzles often tie directly into the theme rather than feeling abstract.
This is where Unlock’s creativity really shines. Some puzzles require you to think symbolically rather than literally, and the app integration is used in interesting ways. It’s also a scenario that rewards paying close attention to flavour text and artwork.
Difficulty-wise, this sits in the middle of the box. It’s challenging without being punishing, and solving its trickier moments feels earned.
Ragnarök
Ragnarök is the most intense and demanding scenario in the box. Drawing from Norse mythology, it leans into epic stakes, gods, and end-of-the-world energy. The puzzles here are more layered, sometimes requiring multiple steps or a deeper understanding of earlier clues.
This scenario assumes you’re comfortable with Unlock’s logic by now. It doesn’t hold your hand, and that’s a good thing. When you solve something here, it feels genuinely satisfying. It’s also the scenario most likely to push groups toward hints if they’re newer to escape room games.
Difficulty Scaling
One thing Unlock consistently does well is difficulty scaling, and Supernatural Adventures is no exception.
- Nova City is beginner-friendly
- Dia de los Muertos ramps things up thoughtfully
- Ragnarök delivers the toughest challenge
This makes the box easy to recommend as a complete experience rather than just a collection of unrelated puzzles. You can play them in order and feel the escalation naturally.
If you’re new to Unlock entirely, this box is still a solid entry point, especially if you’re willing to use hints when needed. If you’re experienced, Ragnarök will give you what you’re looking for.
App Integration and Creativity
The Unlock app remains one of the strongest implementations of phone integration in board gaming. It doesn’t replace the physical components, it enhances them.
The app handles:
- Timers
- Hints
- Audio cues
- Visual puzzles
- Occasional surprises that would be impossible in a purely analog game
In Supernatural Adventures, the app is used creatively without becoming intrusive. You’re not staring at your phone the whole time, but when the app does something clever, it lands. These moments are often highlights of the scenarios.
Importantly, the app is optional in terms of hints. You can choose how much help you want, which makes the game accessible to a wide range of players.
Who Is This For?
This box is an easy recommendation for:
- Anyone who enjoys escape rooms
- Players who like puzzle-heavy games
- Couples or small groups looking for a cooperative experience
- Fans of Unlock who want more thematic variety
If you dislike puzzle games, timed experiences, or thinking under pressure, this won’t convert you. But if you already enjoy solving things together and having “aha” moments, Supernatural Adventures delivers.

The main storyline is decent, with enough mystery and emotional weight to keep you engaged. It doesn’t reinvent JRPG storytelling, but it’s competently told and paced.
Where Harvestella really shines is in its side quests and character quests. These are far more interesting than expected, often exploring personal struggles, relationships, and quieter emotional beats. They don’t feel like filler.
One downside is the lack of a scene skip option. Some story moments and dialogue sequences can feel longer than necessary, especially if you’re replaying or simply eager to get back to gameplay. This is one of the game’s most noticeable quality-of-life omissions.
Final Thoughts
Unlock! Supernatural Adventures continues what the series does best: clever puzzles, strong themes, and smart use of technology. The missing physical solutions booklet is a letdown, but it’s not a deal-breaker given the official online solutions.
If you’ve never played Unlock, this box is a solid place to start. If you’re already a fan, it’s another worthy addition. For me, Unlock remains the gold standard for escape room board games, and Supernatural Adventures reinforces why I keep buying every new release without hesitation.
